Artist Replete presents "Never Fold - Red" from Chicago artist Arthur J. Williams Jr. During the 2020 pandemic, the artist began experimenting with different materials to recreate how money crumples when it's put in a pocket.

 

The idea took years of development with trial and error on many different types of paper until the artist found one suitable for the creation. A material that hardens with liquid. The artist calls it "Space Material".  

 

Arthur signs each crumpled bill with his full name and his street name, Julius Da Vinci. The bills serial number has been replaced with the artists prisoner ID number that he received while serving a sentence for counterfeiting millions. 

 

Arthur J. Williams Jr. is a South Side Chicago native who gained notoriety as the counterfeiter who successfully replicated the 1996 hundred dollar bill, producing millions in fake currency before serving twelve years in federal prison.

During his incarceration, he taught himself to paint, transforming his past precision into a new creative discipline. Since his release, Williams has emerged as a full time artist whose work often incorporates printed U.S. currency, exploring themes of value, authenticity, and redemption. His exhibitions, including recent showcases at LondonHouse Chicago and Art Basel, reflect a continued evolution as he turns the art of replication into a study of transformation.
