Artist Replete presents a historical piece titled "Abraham Lincoln" from the iconic artist Leroy Neiman. This work was initially commissioned as an oil painting by Ralph Newman, founder of Chicago's beloved Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. The image is based on Anthony Berger's photograph of Lincoln taken at Matthew Brady's studio on February 9, 1864.

History of The Work

We believe this particular serigraph was originally owned by Ralph G. Newman, who inspired the artist to produce the piece and a limited run of prints. Artwork includes all original documentation and framing.

Statement from Ralph G. Newman

"When I heard that LeRoy Neiman was interested in Abraham Lincoln, and had long admired the life and achievements of our Sixteenth President, I visited with him and discussed the possibility of his executing a new portrait.

Just as every generation needs a new biography of Abraham Lincoln to satisfy the needs and relate to the problems of the times, so too do we need a new view of the man. Neiman agreed to study the project, read some books I had provid-ed, and carefully examine a large collection of the better photographs of Lincoln I made available to him. After a few weeks he reported back to me that he not only agreed to do the work, but was so enthusiastic that he had begun to work on the portrait.

The result is one of the most striking and powerful paintings of Lincoln ever done. It has been praised by Lincoln admirers and art critics. I am proud that I was permitted a small role in this project."

Leroy Neiman was a prolific American artist best known for his vibrant, energetic depictions of sporting events, celebrities, and leisure activities. Born in 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota, Neiman developed a signature style characterized by bold color, dynamic brushstrokes, and a sense of movement that captured the excitement of the subjects he portrayed.

He gained widespread recognition as the official painter for several Olympic Games and through his long association with Playboy magazine, where he created the “Femlin” character and documented high-society lifestyles. Neiman became a cultural icon in his own right, with his work appearing in countless media outlets and his presence a fixture at major sporting events.

Neiman's popularity extended far beyond the art world, making him one of the most commercially successful artists of the 20th century. His artworks have been collected by celebrities, athletes, and public institutions alike. His highest sold work to date is "Football Star Constellation" (1978), featuring a group of football players in action on the field, rendered in Neiman's signature style with energetic brushstrokes and bold colors. The painting fetched $430,000 at a Sotheby’s auction, cementing Neiman’s place not only in pop culture but in the high-value art market as well.
