Acrylic Paint, Computer Parts, Lapel Pins, Building Blocks & Scrabble Pieces on 48" x 60" Framed Wood Panel

In a medium of work developed in early 2022, artist Roger J. Carter uses computer parts to recreate a portrait of Richard Pryor. Previously a software engineer, Carter revisits his love for computers, blending it with his profession as an artist.

Named after a quote found at the end of a Richard Pryor stand ups session titled Mudbone: " Cause you don’t know when you’re gonna go. So don’t take this shit serious. You better have some fun and plenty of it. Cause when the shit old and you ask for a recharge, it’s too late. So all I can say is keep some sunshine on your face. "

During the spring of 2020, South Side, Chicago artist Roger J. Carter formed a new body of work through relentless experimentation. He gradually built a style that spoke to his personal taste and inspired everyone around him.

Using toy soldiers, the artist has created captivating portraits of musicians, activists and writers. The soldiers, previously looked at as nothing more than a toy, took on a new meaning, as part of a greater expression.

"For me I've always been political in my art. I've always done revolutionary characters and rebels. So in that regard, I consider my art as a form of protest. My Art Is My Protest."
