Ink & Charcoal on OSB Board

16" × 24" (41 × 61 cm)

Framed

Portrait Study I distills Gonzalo Pizarro’s signature approach into a more intimate scale, where the fragmented surface of OSB carries just enough information for the face to emerge and recede at once. Ink and charcoal move across the natural patterns of the wood, allowing the figure to form through interruption rather than clarity.

What remains is a portrait that feels caught in transition, where presence is built from absence and detail gives way to suggestion. In this reduced format, the tension of the work becomes more immediate, drawing the viewer closer into its shifting surface.

Gonzalo Pizarro is a visual artist with a background in architecture. His work is rooted in the use of unique materials, especially those that are raw, industrial, or overlooked. The artist became widely recognized after he posted a video of his work on OSB board that achieved over 14 million views.

Art critics and enthusiast became astonished at the new approach using the compressed wooden board. Pizarro was drawn to creating works on OSB due to the unpredictability and chaos found within the wood.

"That’s where Fragments of Identity begin, with a material that reflects how we’re often shaped by what we can’t fully control. Working with OSB is a negotiation: some fragments support the process, others resist. And that mirrors life, how we build meaning from limitations, from contradictions."
