Acrylic Paint Over Currency Print

36" x 48"

-

A reclining figure, reminiscent of modernist composition, is reinterpreted through bold color and simplified structure, set against a layered backdrop of currency. The work balances recognition and distortion, creating tension between influence and originality.

Painted over sheets of printed money that include the artist’s own signature, the piece pushes further into questions of authorship and control. By embedding identity directly into the surface, Arthur J. Williams Jr. reinforces his ongoing exploration of value, authenticity, and perception.

Arthur J. Williams Jr. is a South Side Chicago native who gained notoriety as the counterfeiter who successfully replicated the 1996 hundred dollar bill, producing millions in fake currency before serving twelve years in federal prison.

During his incarceration, he taught himself to paint, transforming his past precision into a new creative discipline. Since his release, Williams has emerged as a full time artist whose work often incorporates printed U.S. currency, exploring themes of value, authenticity, and redemption. His exhibitions, including recent showcases at LondonHouse Chicago and Art Basel, reflect a continued evolution as he turns the art of replication into a study of transformation.
