Artist Replete presents La Cage et celui que nous attendons by Sandra Chevrier, an XL giclée print from her internationally recognized La Cage series. This work features Chevrier’s unmistakable approach to portraiture, where a hyper-realistic female gaze is intersected by layered fragments of comic book imagery, creating a visual tension between exposure and protection. The composition centers on the eyes and mouth, anchoring the emotional gravity of the piece while the surrounding fragments suggest the weight of expectation, projection, and imposed narratives.
Printed on Moab paper 300gr, the standard edition of this work was produced in an exceptionally limited run of just 6. The example presented here is the only Artist Proof, retained separately from the numbered edition and released directly from the artist.
Artist proofs are traditionally held back from public release, positioning this work among the rarest large-scale print offerings within Chevrier’s practice. The XL format amplifies the intensity and precision of her technique, allowing surface detail and layered imagery to fully command the viewer’s attention. As with all works from La Cage, the piece reflects Chevrier’s ongoing examination of identity, strength, and the unseen pressures carried beneath the surface.
Please note: by purchasing this work, the collector agrees not to resell the piece for a minimum of two years following the date of purchase, in accordance with the artist’s stipulations.
Sandra Chevrier is a Montréal-based Canadian contemporary artist, born in 1983, internationally recognized for The Cages series, a body of work that has become a defining visual language within contemporary urban and pop-influenced art.
Trained in visual and media arts at Université du Québec à Montréal, Chevrier builds hyper-realistic portraits layered with fragments of comic book imagery, using the human gaze as the emotional center of each work. These collaged “masks” reference the superhero not as fantasy, but as a symbol of the expectations, pressures, and contradictions imposed on identity, particularly the roles placed on women in modern society.
Her work has been exhibited widely across North America, Europe, and beyond, including museum and major gallery presentations, and she has produced landmark public works on an architectural scale.
In 2020, Chevrier collaborated with Shepard Fairey on a 12-story mural in Austin, Texas, recognized as the city’s largest mural, further cementing her presence within global contemporary culture. Balancing technical mastery with cultural critique, Chevrier’s portraits operate at the intersection of fine art, pop iconography, and social commentary, offering images that are immediately striking yet conceptually enduring.
