Artist Replete presents La Cage et le soir brûlé by Sandra Chevrier. Released in 2020 in conjunction with the deluxe edition of Chevrier’s landmark monograph Cages, the standard release of this mini print was produced in a strictly limited, signed and numbered edition of 200. Measuring approximately 9 × 12 inches, the work exemplifies Chevrier’s instantly recognizable signature style, where hyper-realistic portraiture is layered with fragments of comic book imagery to explore themes of identity, societal expectation, and the psychological cages imposed on women.
The example presented here is a Printer’s Proof (PP), held outside of the numbered edition and retained in the artist’s personal collection. While designated as a printer’s proof at the time of production, Chevrier has chosen to identify this work as an Artist Proof, reflecting its provenance and separation from the regular release. Such proofs are produced in extremely limited quantity and are traditionally reserved by the artist, positioning this piece as a rare and distinct example within the Cages publication works.
Sandra Chevrier is one of the most influential and internationally recognized voices in contemporary art today, celebrated for her ability to merge fine art precision with the imagery and symbolism of popular culture, creating works that are both visually striking and conceptually enduring.
Sandra Chevrier is a Montréal-based Canadian contemporary artist, born in 1983, internationally recognized for The Cages series, a body of work that has become a defining visual language within contemporary urban and pop-influenced art.
Trained in visual and media arts at Université du Québec à Montréal, Chevrier builds hyper-realistic portraits layered with fragments of comic book imagery, using the human gaze as the emotional center of each work. These collaged “masks” reference the superhero not as fantasy, but as a symbol of the expectations, pressures, and contradictions imposed on identity, particularly the roles placed on women in modern society.
Her work has been exhibited widely across North America, Europe, and beyond, including museum and major gallery presentations, and she has produced landmark public works on an architectural scale.
In 2020, Chevrier collaborated with Shepard Fairey on a 12-story mural in Austin, Texas, recognized as the city’s largest mural, further cementing her presence within global contemporary culture. Balancing technical mastery with cultural critique, Chevrier’s portraits operate at the intersection of fine art, pop iconography, and social commentary, offering images that are immediately striking yet conceptually enduring.
