Artist Replete presents "Never Fold - Puzzle" from Chicago artist Arthur J. Williams Jr. During the 2020 pandemic, the artist began experimenting with different materials to recreate how money crumples when it's put in a pocket. The idea took years of development with trial and error on many different types of paper until the artist found one suitable for the creation. A material that hardens with liquid. The artist calls it "Space Material".
Puzzle pieces have appeared in a variety of Arthurs work over the years but never on this material. The puzzle is in reference to cracking the counterfeit code with all security features pieced together to equal a perfect replica of U.S. currency.
Arthur J. Williams Jr. is a South Side Chicago native perhaps best known for being the counterfeiter who successfully replicated the 1996 hundred dollar bill. Secret Service agents doggedly pursued Williams as he printed what some estimate to have been as much as $10 million in fake money before he eventually landed in federal prison for six and a half years.
During his incarceration, Arthur was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, American Greed,Forbesand a critically acclaimed book titled "The Art of Making Money."
To pass the time during his sentence, Williams taught himself to paint. Since being released from prison 10 years ago, Arthur has reemerged as a full time artist. His unique comeback story has been documented by NBC,Vice, and most recentlyChicago Sun Times.
