Artist Replete presents Muerte Sonata by Chicago artist Rawooh. Painted directly onto what appears to be a vintage window shutter, the piece carries the quiet weight of an object once used to control light and darkness. Rawooh turns that history into metaphor, merging a realistic human face with a fading skull beneath a crown of bright yellow petals. The contrast between the shutter’s aged surface and the vibrant teal background heightens the tension between life, memory, and decay.
The flowers erupt across the top edge like an unexpected burst of light while the lower half sinks into shadow, creating a visual sonata of opposites. Muerte Sonata showcases Rawooh’s gift for blending beauty with mortality in a way that feels both striking and contemplative.
Raul Ramirez, aka "Rawooh" has been known for years in Chicago for his eye-catching graffiti and mural work. His career began in 2006 as a street artist and later shifted to canvas work as his style began to mature. Some of his favorite mediums are painting on found objects, such as wooden crates.
He describes his style as a fusion between comic books and graffiti. Even though he has over a decade of experience in the art world as both a street and gallery artist, he still considers it a “hobby.”Learn more by reading our interview with the artist
