Artist Replete presents "Shredded Hundred - Purple" from Chicago artist Arthur J. Williams Jr. The piece is in reference to how the artist would shred counterfeit money when he felt it wasn't up to his standard. Using interference oil paint, a tint of purple appears in this bill when it's looked at from different directions.

History Behind The Crumpled Bills

During the 2020 pandemic, the artist began experimenting with different materials to recreate how money would crumple when it's put in a pocket. The idea took years of development with trial and error on many different types of paper until the artist found one suitable for the creation. A material that hardens when crumpled. The artist calls it "Space Material."

Arthur J. Williams Jr. is a South Side Chicago native perhaps best known for being the counterfeiter who successfully replicated the 1996 hundred dollar bill. Secret Service agents doggedly pursued Williams as he printed what some estimate to have been as much as $10 million in fake money before he eventually landed in federal prison for six and a half years.

During his incarceration, Arthur was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine, American Greed, Forbes and a critically acclaimed book titled "The Art of Making Money."

To pass the time during his sentence, Williams taught himself to paint. Since being released from prison 10 years ago, Arthur has reemerged as a full time artist. His unique comeback story has been documented by NBC, Vice, and most recently Chicago Sun Times.
